The Most Important Questions to Ask Your Elopement Photographer

Are you considering alternatives to a traditional wedding? More and more couples are turning to elopements as an adventurous, lower-cost, and more personalized approach to tying the knot. If you’re considering an elopement, and you’re looking for a photographer to document the experience, here are some important questions to ask before signing on the dotted line:

How much experience do you have shooting elopements?

This should be one of the first questions you ask when looking for a photographer for your elopement wedding. Just because a photographer is skilled in a particular niche does not mean they will be able to capture your elopement properly.

A photographer with wedding experience is a step in the right direction, but what you really need is a photographer that has experience shooting elopements specifically. While wedding photography experience means the photographer will understand the basics of capturing your day, a photographer with elopement experience will know how to capture outdoor scenery and landscapes perfectly, while also highlighting you and your partner and allowing you both to shine.

An experienced photographer will also be prepared for the often-adventurous journey you may take in order to find the perfect location to say “I do”. They’ll also be prepared for whatever natural elements you encounter – from difficult lighting to wind to snow, they’ll know what to do to make sure they’re still getting the most beautiful photographs for you and your partner.

Do you offer videography?

Videography is growing in popularity, but is still often regarded as less of a priority than photography. But we tend to disagree with this sentiment, and highly recommend making room in your elopement budget for videography. Why?

First, because videography captures memories in a way photography simply cannot compete with. Do you want to remember the sound of birds chirping as you said your vows? Or the rush of the waterfall behind you as you kissed for the first time as a married couple? Maybe you just want to be able to revisit the way your partner’s voice sounded as they said their vows, or the way they looked at you when you said yours. Videography is the best technology we have available to capture the most true-to-life memories of your elopement.

Another incredibly important reason to consider videography is because your family and friends that are unable to attend in person (as elopements typically have a very short guest list) will want to feel as if they were a part of the experience! While photography will allow your friends and family to visualize the experience, videography will give them a front row seat to the entire event. They’ll get to experience your ceremony as if they were there themselves.

Finally, consider videography because of the money-saving nature of elopements! Elopements typically cost much less than traditional weddings. So you might have some wiggle room! Why not take a bit of that extra savings and put it toward a beautiful and professional video of a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that you’ll never want to forget?

A few side notes: Be sure to look for a videographer that has a strong background in videography, and ask to see some of their work to make sure you love their vibe. And just as importantly, make sure they have elopement-specific videography experience – for the same reasons we gave in our first tip!

A photographer with strong videography skills like this will likely be harder to find, but once you find them, you can rest assured you will be working with the very best.

And finally, don’t forget to ask if they offer a discounted photography and videography combo package, should you choose to book them for both!

What will you need from me and my partner on the day of the ceremony?

Typically, the answer will be, “Not much!”. Experienced photographers and videographers will have everything covered, and pretty much all they’ll need from you is…you! They may ask you for an itinerary or location list for planning purposes.

They may also have recommendations for you based on your location(s) and the weather outlook day-of.

And although they likely won’t say this, they’ll want you to trust them to capture your elopement perfectly, because it’s their job, and they’re passionate about it! You know they’re fantastic – you chose them! Let them work their magic while you focus on your partner and your exciting adventure in the making.

In what other ways can you be of assistance to us?

Many experienced elopement photographers and videographers have a wealth of knowledge around elopements - outside of only photography and videography - that they may make available to you! They might be able to serve as a guide as you look for the perfect locations. They are likely well-informed in terms of the best venues, food and lodging, and more. They may have contacts in the area, should you be looking for last-minute alterations, floral, musicians, guides, etc. They can probably offer helpful elopement planning tips and common mistakes that couples make when planning their elopement.

Ask them what information they have, and they’ll probably be happy to share it with you!
